Basic Commands

When it comes to playing MUDs, commands are king. You enter a command every time you type in fact. While most of the basic commands are short and simple, others can be quite long or not as obvious. To begin, we'll focus on the easier ones and make our way to the more intricate.

Basic Commands | Movement | Communication | Equipment

Skills and Spells | Fighting | Merchants | Miscellaneous

Basic Commands

LOOK/READ: Want to see where you are? Type 'look'. Want to get more description on that cool-looking sword or scary barmaid in the room? Type 'look sword' or 'look barmaid'. The 'read' command may also be substituted for look these cases. If you wish to look in a particular direction, which would require you to type 'look [direction]'. (I'll give more detail about the available directions shortly.)

OPEN/UNLOCK/CLOSE/LOCK: Let's say you've found a chest. You've typed 'look chest' and it says that the chest is closed. Try typing 'open chest' to see if the chest will open for you. Sometimes the chest may be locked, which would require you to find a key of some sort. Once you've found said key and returned to the chest you may type 'unlock chest', then 'open chest' to gain access to its contents. The converse of the previous commands may also be used. If you do not want people accessing your chest, you could 'close chest' and 'lock chest' if you have the appropriate key. Note: Chests are but one item that these commands relate to in the game. Doors are another prime example for their usage.

LOOK IN/EXAMINE: Now that the chest has been opened, you probably want to view what is inside of it. The proper command for this would be 'look in chest'. You may also type 'examine chest', which equates to typing both 'look chest' and 'look in chest' at the same time. Examine can be quite a useful command in the future, allowing you to identify objects so that you may use them to their full potential.

GET/TAKE/DROP/GIVE/PUT: So you've looked in the chest and saw that there was a dazzling diamond necklace or a wicked awesome gold battleaxe. To take it out you would type 'get necklace chest' or 'take battleaxe chest'. Take and get are interchangeable commands. Now let's say that you just realized you're going through the inventory of the Cranezmorian army and that taking something of theirs is probably not the best idea, 'put battleaxe chest' would place the item back where it was. What? That diamond necklace was actually a cubic zirconia? Just type 'drop necklace' and it shows up on the floor. You may also wish to pass the necklace on to someone. (Don't be cheap. Buy a real one, ok?) Typing 'give necklace [insert character name]' will give the necklace to that character.

Movement

Another vital aspect of the game is movement. In Cities of M'dhoria, we have six available directions: north, south, east, west, up, and down. In order to travel in a particular direction, you need only type said direction. When in any room, the available exits are listed just below the current room description. In some cases, the direction is surrounded by parentheses like this: north (south) west. North, south, and west are available ways to exit the room, but there is a door to the south that is closed and possibly locked. You must use the open/unlock commands mentioned earlier in this case. Earlier it was also mentioned that by typing 'look north' or 'look west' you can look in the specified directions to find important information. Another simple command is 'scan'. Scan allows you to take a quick glance in all directions, but you are unable to see as far as if you'd used the look command instead. One other method of movement is the use of the 'enter' command. At times there is a large tree, a well, a swirling portal, or some dense brush that can be stepped into to visit another room. Type 'enter ' for these situations.

SIT/REST/SLEEP/STAND/WAKE: Each character has so many movement points, and when they run out they must rest a bit before they're able to move again. There are several ways to make sure you regenerate movement (as well as hit points and mana) faster. 'Sit' and 'rest' are the two most basic. When you've finished resting and your movement points have increased, you need to type 'stand' before you try to move again. 'Sleep' is the quickest way to regain your strength, but you're more vulnerable in your unconscious state. 'Wake' returns you from your slumber.

EAT/DRINK: If you are hungry or thirsty, (and the game will inform you when you are), then your stats will recover at a much slower rate. When you come across food or a place to drink just type 'eat' or 'drink'. Note: You must have picked up the food item prior to eating it, but some drinkable objects don't necessarily require such.

Communication

THINK/SAY/SAYTO/WHISPER/SHOUT/YELL: Alongside movement in its importance to MUDs is the concept of communication. The 'think' command portrays thoughts that float around in a character's head. 'Say' and 'sayto' are the most utilized form of communication. It is strictly something said from one person, typically to another. You may also 'whisper' to other people in the same room as you, or 'shout' or 'yell' at them if they are in the nearby area.

PRAY: 'Pray' is another form of communication; a direct line to your deity. This command can only be used when a character has received the blessings of a god.

QUESTION/TELL: The previously mentioned forms are all considered "in character" or IC ways to speak with one another. 'Question' and 'tell' are "out of character", or OOC. 'Question' was designed so that you may ask the immortals a question you have. 'Tell' is a direct line to another character in the game.

Equipment

EQUIPMENT/WEAR/WIELD/REMOVE/COMPARE/INVENTORY: As you progress throughout the game, the equipment you find along the way may or may not be better than the type you currently have. The 'compare' command allows a player to compare like equipment. Typing 'equipment' shows the belongings you are currently wearing. 'Inventory' shows what you are carrying at the present moment. If you want to wear something else from your inventory, you would type 'wear '. You would type 'remove ' to do the opposite. 'Wield' and 'remove' accomplish the same as above, only with a weapon.

Skills and Spells

TRAIN/PRACTICE/SGROUP/SKILL/MAGIC: Leveling your character on Cities of M'dhoria is dependent upon skill and spell proficiency. You begin with five attributes that you rolled when creating your character, and a set of skills that begin at 1%. (Note: Racial skills are the exception to this, for they begin at 74%.) Raising your attributes makes you more capable at successfully landing specific skills or spells, learning quicker while practicing, and receiving higher increases when reaching a new level, among other things. You may train these attributes to go higher by visiting a trainer and using the 'train' command. You are allotted very few trains during a character's lifetime, so choose wisely where you wish to use them.

Practices are used to grow knowledge in a specific skill or spell, increasing the percentage of how well you are able to execute it. You can see which ones you have at the present moment by typing 'skill' for a list of skills, 'magic' for a list of available spells and respective mana costs, or 'practice' for a combined list with their current percentages. Guildmasters must be sought out to practice these. Skills and spells are only able to be practiced up to 74% at a guildmaster, and then must be cast/used repeatedly in order to attain further proficiency. If you wish to find which guildmaster is able to teach a selected skill/spell, type 'sgroup ' for the information.

MEMORIZE/SPELLBOOK/CAST/FORGET: You must memorize a spell before it can be cast. This is done by typing 'memorize [spellname]'. A certain number of spell slots are available to you dependent upon your level. Once you fill them, you cannot memorize more without casting the spells or forgetting them. To cast, you type 'cast [spell name]' or 'cast [spell name] [target]' depending on the spell cast. The forget command works like most others; 'forget [spell name]'. The amount of spell slots accessible to you can be found by typing 'spellbook'. The only way to regenerate spell slots is by using the sleep command mentioned previously.

Fighting

KILL/FLEE/MURDER/CONSIDER: There are many different types of characters in the lands of M'dhoria, and most of the time it's easy to tell whether or not you can defeat them. During those times you can't though, the 'consider' command may assist you. If you want to initiate a melee attack on another character, 'kill [character]' will do so. If said character begins to whoop on you too much for your liking, use the 'flee' command to flee from battle. Otherwise, if you manage to stun the character, 'murder [character]' kills the person you stunned.

Merchants

BUY/SELL/LIST/VALUE: Typing 'list' when in the presence of a merchant selling something will trigger him/her/it to display what is being sold. 'Buy ' will buy something he has listed, or 'sell ' will sell an object to him that is currently in your inventory. You can acquire the value to an object you own by typing 'value ' when at said merchant.

Miscellaneous, Yet Useful

SCORE/WHO: Just two basic commands to go, both of which are used for OOC purposes. The 'score' command is incredibly useful, as it displays essential information about your character. Your short description, religion, hours played, hp, mana, movement points, armor class, and accent are just a few bits listed. Typing 'who' brings up a list of everyone currently signed on to CoM and is helpful to find if the person you want to send a tell to is currently online.

And that's it! If for some reason there is information that comes across rather unclear to you here, check the help file by typing 'help [keyword]' or ask an immortal using the question or tell command. Enjoy!
